The project
Relaxed performances are adapted cultural experiences that change the usual conditions of a show so that more people can enjoy theatre, music or cinema in a calm, welcoming setting.
Some of the venue's rules are relaxed: moving around, making noise or leaving and coming back are allowed whenever needed, reducing the barriers that make taking part difficult.
The barriers it breaks down
Sensory barriers
We adjust the volume, the lighting and the special effects that can cause overload.
Barriers around how to behave in the hall
We relax the rules: moving, making noise or stepping out and back in are part of a freer experience.
Information barriers
We provide information in advance about the space, the show and its length, to reduce uncertainty.
Social barriers
We create a setting where people can enjoy culture without fear of being judged.
Model
A model combining light and sound adjustments, quiet spaces, visual stories and staff training.
Milestones reached
- Relaxed performances established as an accessibility model across the Apropa Cultura network.
- Publication of a dedicated guide to organising relaxed performances.
- Rolled out at L'Auditori, the Mercat de les Flors and the Gran Teatre del Liceu, among others.
- Introduction of visual stories, quiet spaces and staff training.

The process
Every performance is built through an adaptation process that brings together the needs of the audience, the show itself and what the venue can offer.
